For the New Intellectual: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (50th Anniversary Edition) (Signet), by Ayn Rand

This is Ayn Rand's challenge to the prevalent philosophical doctrines of our time and the "atmosphere of guilt, of panic, of despair, of boredom, and of all-pervasive evasion" that they create.

One of the most controversial figures on the intellectual scene, Ayn Rand was the proponent of a moral philosophy—and ethic of rational self-interest—that stands in sharp opposition to the ethics of altruism and self-sacrifice. The fundamentals of this morality—"a philosophy for living on Earth"—are here vibrantly set forth by the spokesman for a new class, For the New Intellectual.

A manifesto against nihilsm and wake up call for the brain.
By A Customer
Let it be known that For The New Intellectual is a book dense with psychological insights and eye opening rational objectivism. This reader was awed by Ayn Rand's crisp writing, and cutting wit. Liberals will be immediately offended, but for those without philosophical bias, Rand is difficult to dismiss.
The book includes the essay, "For the New Intellectual" as well as excerpts from We the Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead, and many speaches from Atlas Shrugged. The beginning essay is more than worth the price of admission, while the excerpts gave this first time Rand reader a good sense of where to turn next.
Ayn Rand's philosophy is truly life affirming and hard with truth. Truth hurts sometimes, and Rand is not easy answers for idle minds. Rather, her philosophy dares to look starkly at where man's moral code has come and where it has led us. Ayn Rand seperates herself from all other thinkers that I've experienced because of her perspective as a 20th Century American. While many of her ideas find their root in Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy, she stands alone-- offering a positive solution for mankind. She absolutely asserts that man is the end in himself, and that his happiness on earth is his proper goal.
For the New Intellectual is both a slap in the face and fire in one's pants. Some will answer Ayn Rand's call for a new moral code and meaning to life, and as she says of the others, "leave them to heaven."

A great new perspective of dominant ideologies
By Eric Kassan
The first half of For the New Intellectual is a detailed non-fiction essay explaining past and current ideologies in terms of "mystics of muscle", aka "Attilas", and "mystics of the mind", aka "witch doctors". These basically translate into those who want to control what people *do* such as dictators, and those who want to control what people *believe* such as religious leaders. The essay goes into detail explaining their dependency on both each other and their victims. Perhaps most importantly it explains how not to be a victim.
The second half of the book illustrates many of the principles described in the first half through excerpts from Ayn Rand's fictional works We The Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged. WARNING: There are plot spoilers in the excerpts.

Maybe you are disgusted by the fact...
By A Customer
After I had read For the the Intellectual, I found myself craving to find more knowledge of her philosophy, I saw in a winderfully flowing style the actual points of Ayn Rand's philosophy. Unlike many of those who read this book(probably only the portions they needed to convince themselves of this Author's psychosis) and posted their reviews, I was not revolted by these words. I have seen these things around me all my life, and if Ayn Rand had not published her philosophy, I surely would have published something very similar eventually. It seems to me that the people who are turned away by this book are the people that take the most benefit from the current moral scheme. The people who are the fanatic crazy types about this philosophy are the one's who have been drained of their entire essence and wish to unlock their inner capabilities. If you wish to simply be able to live fully, fully for yourself, and wish to use YOUR potential to the fullest extent, then I suggest you read this stunning piece of work. And please take not that it is philosophy, and not an exact account of history

The Retreat: Hitler's First Defeat, by Michael Jones

The gripping history of the ferocious turning point of World War Two, when Hitler's armies were halted on the Eastern Front

At the moment of crisis in late 1941 on the Eastern Front, with the forces of Hitler massing on the outskirts of Moscow, the miraculous occurred: Moscow was saved. Yet this feat of endurance was a prelude to a long and arduous retreat in which Soviet troops, inspired by deep beliefs in the sacred Motherland, pushed back German forces steeled by the vision of the Ubermensch--the iron-willed fighter. Supported by tanks and ski battalions, Soviet troops engaged in this desperate struggle in the harshest Russian weather.

Michael Jones draws upon a wealth of new eyewitness testimonies from both sides of the conflict to vividly chronicle this pivotal chapter in the Second World War as he takes us from the German invasion of the Soviet Union on the morning of June 22 through the counteroffensive that carried into the spring of 1942. From the German soldier finding his comrades frozen into blocks of ice to the Russian lieutenant crying with rage at the senseless destruction of his unit, the author shows us the faces of war when the Wehrmacht was repelled and the titanic and cruel struggle of two world powers forged the fate of Europe.

From Publishers Weekly
Jones's earlier Leningrad and Stalingrad established this British military historian's skill in conveying the human dimensions of the Russo-German War. His new narrative addresses the German sweep through Russia in the summer of 1941, its defeat at the gates of Moscow by a rejuvenated Red Army, and the massive Soviet counterattack that pushed the Wehrmacht to the edge of destruction. Jones makes a convincing case that the Fuehrer's "stand fast" order in December 1941 entailed unnecessary losses. Retreat, he argues, did not inevitably mean collapse. The point remains debatable. But there is no question of Jones's success presenting, in their own words, the growing conviction of the Germans doing the fighting that Barbarossa had been a compound mistake. "Does no one realize what it is like here?" asked one bewildered corps commander. Across the battle line, six months of atrocities demonstrated to the Russian people that whatever was wrong with the U.S.S.R., the Germans were not the solution. "I vowed to kill as many of them as possible," wrote one Soviet junior officer. His words are an epigram for an apocalyptic war, perceptively evoked here. 8 pages of b&w photos; 3 maps. (Dec.) (c)

From Booklist
A military historian with particular expertise on the eastern front of WWII offers this grimly absorbing account of one of the battles that shaped the whole campaign: the German retreat from Moscow in December 1941. Already overextended and undersupplied, the Germans were in no position to resist a massive Soviet counterattack. The next two months were the stuff of nightmares for the soldiers on both sides, whose letters and memoirs have been exhaustively used to paint a horrifying picture of starvation, cold weather, nonexistent medical care, and a complete lack of compassion for opponents (two million Russian POWs died during this period). The Germans suffered an additional defeat, because Hitler believed that his No retreat! order saved his army from rout and from its defeatist generals. His assumption of the supreme command, fully equipped with vast arrogance and little skill, was another large stone that eventually helped build the tomb of the Third Reich. Sound and readable. --Roland Green

Review
Jones deserves full credit for the remarkable personal testimonies he has amassed. (The Sunday Times (UK))

A mass of first-person material that has been cleverly assembled to paint a striking picture. (BBC History Magazine)

A gripping account of the opening stages of Hitler's war of extermination against the Russians. . . . Jones tells the story of the struggle with verve and scholarship. (Andrew Roberts, author of Masters and Commanders)

A vivid, illuminating account. (World War II magazine (on Stalingrad))

A tribute to the resilience of the human spirit. (Herald (UK) (on Leningrad))

Ground-level look at the Eastern Front
By Scott Whitmore
The fall of the Iron Curtain and the Soviet Union, and the subsequent release of archives and documents, has been a boon to military historians like Michael Jones. Jones has written several books on the Eastern Front, including my most recent read: The Retreat: Hitler's First Defeat.

The Retreat does not break any new ground in describing the Red Army turning back Hitler's armies at the gates of Moscow during the critical months of December 1941-February 1942, but where it stands out is the narrative method. Jones draws heavily from first-hand accounts in diaries, letters, unit histories, and interviews of soldiers and civilians people on both sides, crafting a very human perspective of events.

Of particular note for me was the number of very senior German officers who realized the Nazi's harsh treatment of Soviet prisoners was creating a human tragedy that would have severe consequences. We could argue whether these officers could or should have done more than simply report the situation -- prisoners were starved, beaten, diseased, overworked, and out-and-out murdered while held in ad-hoc camps with little protection from the harsh winter -- but the record at least shows they were aware and concerned.

Tens of thousands of Soviet prisoners died in German captivity, and the Red Army carefully ensured its soldiers were aware it was happening -- ensuring most Soviet soldiers would fight fanatically and with utter hatred for the Nazi invaders.

Common German soldiers were also aware of what was happening with prisoners, and more directly the civilian populace. There are several instances in The Retreat in which individual soldiers from both sides displayed humanity and compassion, including a spontaneous Christmas mass attended by combatants and civilians from both sides.

Of course these incidents are overshadowed by the brutality and no-holds-barred fighting which is the common -- and correctly held -- perception of warfare on the Eastern Front. Many German soldiers and senior officers shared Hitler's rampant racism and hate of the Soviet system, and their actions and words show this clearly. Still, it is refreshing to see the views of a few individuals change over the course of the book, as they come to grips with seeing the results of their actions.

My largest quibble with this book is the lack of photos in the Kindle edition. The author speaks in the preface of obtaining photos during interviews with participants, and the hardcover listing on Amazon.com indicates eight pages of photos, but evidently these were not deemed necessary for the eBook version.

I found The Retreat to be very interesting and I would recommend it to anyone interested in getting a ground-level look at action on the Eastern Front. It was a quick read, with Jones setting the stage by providing strategic updates on the situation before shifting to first-person accounts that added color and drama.

A Paul Carell type of read
By DrBig
I'm not going to repeat the points already made in the excellent 3-5 star reviews already posted; I largely agree with them.

I would offer that this book reminded me of Paul Carell's "Hitler Moves East", although much more balanced. It captured the initial enthusiasm felt by the troops for their belief in Hitler's crusade in the east, followed by growing doubts as Summer passed into Winter, the temperature dropped & Ivan showed no signs of collapse as the German Army was promised. What really jumped out at me were the atrocities committed by the regular German Army in 1941, often advertised as the excesses of the SS in other works. Granted there were honorable German soldiers & they are adequately portrayed in this book, but in large, the average German soldier didn't have the time, resources, and moral compass to behave with dignity in the east. Everything in Barbrossa/Typhoon was extreme. The volume of prisoners was extreme, the wear & tear on man & machine was extreme, the climate was extreme, the zeal of the defenders was extreme, and German resources were few. No food or shelter for the POWs, no winter clothing for the troops, no replacements for the excessive losses.

I give 4 out of 5 stars for a few technical faults. a) the claim that the T-34 was first encountered in Typhoon, and b) the lack of a decent map

Excellent
By Thomas Reiter
First, I should say that if I could have, I would have given this book 4 1/2 stars, rather than 4, because it is an excellent book for what it is, which is a collection of German-centric anecdotes from fall 41-spring 42 regarding the fighting around Moscow. The author includes numerous memorable accounts about the fighting during this period, as well the the suffering endured by both armies and civilians. Importantly, he doesn't seem to have a ideological agenda, and includes many interesting accounts regardless of whether it makes the Germans or Sov side look good or bad, competent or incompetent.

The only slight flaws in this book are:
1) while the author includes a limited number of accounts from the Sov side, the vast majority are from the German side. The quality of the German accounts generally makes up for this, but it would have made an excellent book even better to have used more Sov sources.

2) The author doesn't include quite enough about the "big picture." While the author gives a general description of what was going on with the overall front, I think he could have done a bit better at tying the individual accounts into the overall action.

That said, these "criticisms" are really quibbles--if you are interested in East Front action, you'll almost certainly greatly enjoy this book.

Behind the Door of Deceit: Understanding the Biggest Liars in Our Lives, by Bella DePaulo Ph.D.

For years, Bella DePaulo (Ph.D., Harvard) asked ordinary people to tell her research team about the most serious lies they had ever told, and about the most serious lies that were ever told to them. One after another, they opened up, describing lies about love and sex, cheating and shoplifting, illness and abuse, kinship and adoption, achievements and resources. They told about lies that resulted in the loss of relationships, reputations, and large sums of money. They even described lies that proved deadly. Some admitted to living a lie. Although there was much pain in their accounts, there were also evidence of some remarkable resilience. There are lessons from these hundreds of stories of major deceptions. Dr. DePaulo shares tips for avoiding the temptation to tell serious lies, and explains why some of the most unlikely people can be vulnerable to getting duped.

Excellent and easy to read
By a. brou
Dr. DePaulo makes some excellent points in her easy-to-read book.
The most insightful section for me was the one that discussed how lies told by a truly significant other is so damaging, and sometimes spells the end to the relationship.
We hear so much about how affairs and secret lives - once discovered - set into motion the blossoming of a much better relationship for the couple. I have never understood the comment by the offended party that now that the lies and deceit have been revealed, the relationship is better than ever. That might be the ideal for which couples should strive, but I think Dr. DePaulo makes an excellent point that it rarely happens that way.
I did have a couple of problems with her section on lies that are told because people are forced to lie; that others put them in a position not to tell the truth because of fear of retribution.
Everyone of us is responsible for our own behavior. To say that the liar has told an untruth because he/she is afraid to tell the truth sounds an awful lot like blaming the victim.
She also uses the term "dupes" for the recipient of a lie. It seems there could have been a better descriptor, as the word "dupe" tends to make the person sound less than bright.
All in all, this is a wonderful and highly recommended book.

What We Saw, by Aaron Hartzler

Critically acclaimed memoirist Aaron Hartzler, author of Rapture Practice, takes an unflinching look at what happens to a small town when some of its residents commit a terrible crime. This honest, authentic debut novel—inspired by the events in the Steubenville rape case—will resonate with readers who've ever walked that razor-thin line between guilt and innocence that so often gets blurred, one hundred and forty characters at a time.

The party at John Doone's last Saturday night is a bit of a blur. Kate Weston can piece together most of the details: Stacey Stallard handing her shots, Ben Cody taking her keys and getting her home early. . . . But when a picture of Stacey passed out over Deacon Mills's shoulder appears online the next morning, Kate suspects she doesn't have all the details. When Stacey levels charges against four of Kate's classmates, the whole town erupts into controversy. Facts that can't be ignored begin to surface, and every answer Kate finds leads back to the same questions: Who witnessed what happened to Stacey? And what responsibility do they have to speak up about what they saw?

National Book Award finalist Deb Caletti calls What We Saw "a smart, sensitive, and gripping story about the courage it takes to do what's right."

From the Back Cover

The party last Saturday night is a bit of a blur.

Kate Weston can piece together most of the bash at John Doone's house: shots with Stacey Stallard, Ben Cody taking Kate's keys and getting her home early, the feeling that maybe Ben is becoming more than just the guy she's known since they were kids.

But when a picture of Stacey passed out over Deacon Mills's shoulder appears online the next morning, Kate suspects she doesn't have all the details, and begins to ask questions.

What really happened at the party after she left?
Who was still there?
What did they see?

When Stacey levels charges against four of Kate's classmates, the whole town erupts into controversy. Facts that can't be ignored begin to surface, and every answer Kate finds leads back to the same question:

Where was Ben when a terrible crime was committed?

This story—inspired by real events—from debut novelist Aaron Hartzler takes an unflinching look at silence as a form of complicity. It's a book about the high stakes of speaking up, and the razor-thin line between guilt and innocence that so often gets blurred, one hundred and forty characters at a time.

By Kristy
Be prepared to feel a lot of anger when reading this. And also very visceral reactions: a sick feeling in your stomach, tightening in your chest, pulsating heart beat...this book is powerful. I honestly don't think my review will do it justice.

Inspired by true events (ones so shocking and disgusting I can remember where I was when I first heard the news), Hartzler takes a courageous risk and looks deeply into our society's rape culture.

Taking place in small town Iowa where high school basketball reigns and the players are treated like gods, a fellow student accuses four players of sexually assaulting her when she was drunk at a party. Multiple questions arise- is being unable to say no the same as consenting (NO); does a victim "ask" for it or "have it coming" simply for the way they dress or the way they act (NO); what is society's obligation to the accused and more importantly to the victim?

In an interesting take, our MC is neither the victim nor the accused; rather, she is a bystander and fellow student who is plagued with unease and questions about what really happened and how her community is responding to it. Kate's inner turmoil over the situation has her seeking for answers while also feeling hesitant about learning the truth. The decisions Kate is faced with and the way she responds is admirable, brave, and courageous.

For a book about the rape of a girl, Stacey, the victim herself is actually rarely present in the story. Her name and character are degraded, and she is continuously dehumanized, but we never really see her or hear her. I can't help but think this is intentional on the author's part. So many times in rape cases (and many other crimes), the victim is discarded or pushed aside. It becomes all about the suspect, his (or her) life, how he is effected, how his life will change. Or it becomes about the community and the effect it has on them (like losing your star basketball players). Somewhere along the way the victim, the whole reason why we should care, is forgotten or disbarred, just as what happens here to Stacey.

What We Saw is a harrowing novel that sadly hits too close to reality. But hopefully it serves as a reminder that this happens- it is real, it is tragic, and it requires accountability and action be taken.

A novel that has the power to change how people think
By K. Branfield
If you are only going to read one young adult book in your life, then that novel should be What We Saw by Aaron Hartzler. This is a book that matters. This is a novel that is real life at its darkest but also at its most hopeful when one person is willing to speak up when others are not. What We Saw is a story that has the power to change how people think and it needs to be on every person's and every school's reading list.

What We Saw is written in first person from Kate Weston's point of view. A junior with a promising future ahead of her, she, along with several of her classmates attend a party at one of their classmates' home when his parents are out of town. After downing a few too many shots of tequila, her longtime friend Ben Cody makes sure she gets home safely and then he returns to the party to retrieve his car. The next day, social media (esp. Twitter) blows up with tweets, comments and pictures from the night before. One of the pictures going around is one taken of Stacey Stallard and she is drunk, passed out and slung over the shoulder of one of the school's popular basketball players. By Monday morning, whispers about Stacey begin and before the week is over, four popular basketball players will be charged with sexual assault. What really happened that night might have remained a mystery, a case of "he said, she said", if not for Kate Weston. Kate does not like how everyone is trashing Stacey's reputation and she does not like the fact that no one seems interested in knowing what really happened to Stacey. Kate wants to know the truth and she is willing to go against her parents and her friends to uncover it.

Sadly, What We Saw is a fictionalized account of an actual case that happened in 2012. Aaron Hartzler's portrayal of this case is remarkably true to life and it is sometimes incredibly hard to read, let alone fathom. The storyline challenges society's kneejerk reaction to place the blame on the victim and it also challenges many biased beliefs that a woman is "asking" to be raped because of flirtatious behavior, the way she dresses or drinking a little too much. Various discussions offer a thoughtful commentary on what constitutes consent and more importantly, these conversations make it clear that the inability to say no is not an implied yes. A well written, thought-provoking young novel that I highly recommend to readers of all ages.

An important topic, but a very slow read
By Amazon Customer
I'm torn with this book, because although it's not written very well, it's an incredibly important story. I give it 2 out of 5 stars.

A rape. Photos. A video. Social media. What We Saw is inspired by real events, which makes it that much more disturbing. A teen is gang-raped at a party as people watched, and even though there's evidence, no one believes her because she was wearing revealing clothing and comes from a poor family. Besides, the boys accused are part of the town's revered basketball team, and everyone wants them to win, so no one speaks up.

I do think this book is very important for teens to read, and that it should be part of high school curriculums. It contains many conversations about what rape is. Is it rape if she's too drunk to say yes? Yes, it is, and sadly, many teens don't understand this. This book lends an open dialogue about not only rape, but harassment and how teen girls can protect themselves.

I'm giving it 2 stars because it's not written in a compelling or gripping way. I was on page 75 and saying, "When is something going to HAPPEN?" If you read my blog, you know I ask that a lot while reading. But it's a valid point! This book didn't get compelling to me until I was on the last 1/4 of the book, when the story really started to move. Much of the book is mundane and boring, scenes of girls talking about nothing important. I thought maybe these scenes would be important as I read on, but they're not.

If you have a teenager, I do recommend you have them read this book. It can teach them a lot and possibly save them from a bad situation. I don't really recommend it to adults. It's definitely a teen book, but I'm not sure it would even hold a teen's attention.
