Chapter 1

The life of Darth Vader’s secret student took a strange and deadly turn the day his Master first spoke of General Rahm Kota.

He’d had no warning that a moment of such significance was approaching. During his nightly meditations, kneeling on the metal floor of his chamber while construction droids built the Executor, unaware of his existence, he had seen no visions in the pure, angry red of the lightsaber that he held like a burning brand in front of his eyes. Although he had stared until the world vanished and the dark side flowed through him in a bloody tide, the future had remained closed.

Nothing, therefore, prepared him for the sudden deviation from the day’s punishing and unpredictable exercises. His Master was not a patient teacher; neither was he a talkative one. He preferred action to debate, just as he preferred recrimination to reward. Never once in all the days they had sparred together, with lightsaber, telekinesis, or suggestion, had the Dark Lord offered a single word of encouragement. And that was as it should be, he knew. A teacher’s job was not to drag a student along a single, well-worn path. Rather it was to let the student forge his or her own way through the forest, intervening only when the student was hopelessly lost and needed to be corrected.

Even on the wrong paths, he knew, lay some wisdom. What didn’t kill him only made him more powerful in the dark side.

And there had been many, many times he had thought he might die . . .

Breathing heavily after a punishing round of blows, lightsaber lowered in submission, he knelt before his Master and prepared for the killing strike. He could feel the wrath radiating from the Dark Lord like heat—a visceral, angry heat that brought out his skin in gooseflesh. For a moment that seemed to stretch for years, all he could hear was the regular, implacable respiration that kept the man inside the mask alive.

“You were weak when I found you.” The voice seemed to come from the far end of a long, deep tunnel. “You should never have survived my training.”

He closed his eyes. He had heard these words before. They were the closest thing to a bedtime story he’d had as a child. The moral he had taken from them was burned into his mind: Learn . . . or die.

Behind his eyelids he pictured again the clean, cleansing heat of the lightsaber. He had brushed his skin against it many times, defying the pain, and taken numerous small wounds while dueling with his Master. He imagined that he knew what the blade would feel like when it struck him down. Part of him longed for it.

The lightsaber drifted so close to his neck that he could smell his hair burning.

“But now, your hatred has become your strength.”

The lightsaber retreated. With a hiss it deactivated.

“At last, the dark side is your ally.”

He didn’t dare nod or look up. What was this? Some new ruse to lure him into overconfidence and failure?

His Master’s next words made his heart trip a beat.

“Rise, my apprentice.”

Apprentice. So he had always thought himself, but never before had it been said aloud! And that strange motion with the lightsaber . . . Could he possibly have just been knighted?

His lightsaber retracted. It was all he could do to balance on knees that felt suddenly made of rubber. The black shape looming over him was unreadable, limned with crimson from the light of the star shining through the wide viewport to their right. Metal, angular, and functional, the space around them was as familiar to him as the scars on the back of his hand, but suddenly, disconcertingly, everything seemed different.

The apprentice kept his eyes up and his voice level.

“What is your will, my Master?”

“You have defeated many of my rivals. Your training is nearly complete. It is time now to face your first true test.”

A roll call of past missions sped through the apprentice’s mind. Lord Vader had instructed him to dispatch numerous enemies within the Empire down the years: spies and thieves, mainly, with the occasional high-ranking traitor as well. He felt only satisfaction at having fulfilled his duty. His victims had brought their fates upon themselves, these vermin that gnawed at the footings of the Empire’s magnificent edifice.

But this was different. He could sense it in more than his Master’s words. Darth Vader wasn’t talking about some low-life smuggler with no awareness at all of the Force. There could be only one foe he was worthy to fight now.

“Your spies have located a Jedi?”

“Yes. General Rahm Kota.” The name meant nothing to the apprentice: just one of many in an archive of unconfirmed Jedi kills. “He is attacking a critical shipyard above Nar Shaddaa. You will destroy him and bring me his lightsaber.”

Excitement filled the apprentice. He had trained and hoped for this moment as long as he could remember. At last it had come. He could never truly call himself a Sith until he had taken the life of one of his Master’s traditional enemies.

“I’ll leave at once, Master.”

He had taken barely a step toward the door when Darth Vader’s irresistible voice stopped him. “The Emperor cannot discover you.”

“As you wish, my Master.”

“Leave no witnesses. Kill everyone aboard, Imperials and insurgents alike.”

The apprentice nodded, keeping his sudden uncertainty carefully clouded.

“Do not fail in this.”

The lightsaber hanging back at his hip was a comforting, reassuring weight. “No, my lord,” he said, back straight and voice firm.

Darth Vader turned away and gripped his hands behind his back. The red sun painted his helmet with lava highlights.

Thus dismissed, his secret apprentice hurried about his latest, darkest duty.

General Rahm Kota.

The name ran through his mind as he hurried through the warren connecting his Master’s secret chambers. They were sparse, functional spaces, consisting of a meditation chamber, a droid workshop, sleeping quarters large enough for one, and a hangar deck. All were on a concealed level of Darth Vader’s flagship, a space long since written out of the floor plans; it would go unnoticed by the future crew.

The Emperor cannot discover you.

Excited though he was by the thought of hunting Jedi, the reminder of the goal his Master allowed him to share was instantly sobering. All his life he had been trained to turn fear into anger, and anger into power. It was no different, he realized, for Darth Vader. Where else could Lord Vader look for increased power than to the Emperor himself? People were either predators or prey. That was one of the most basic rules of life. Together, Darth Vader and his apprentice would ensure that their joint power only increased.

But first he had to survive an encounter with a Jedi. That his Master had found one at liberty was unsurprising. A handful were suspected to have survived the Great Jedi Purge, and none was more adept at finding them than Darth Vader. The dark side infiltrated every corner of the galaxy; nothing could remain hidden from it forever. Perhaps one day, the apprentice thought, he, too, could seek out his enemies by their thoughts and feelings alone, but like the visions of the future that were closed to him, that ability remained elusive. He had never met a Jedi. Their natures were mysterious to him.

Their history, however, was not. His Master set no lesson plans or written examinations, but Darth Vader did give him access to records surviving from the Republic and the Order he had helped unseat from its position of undeserved privilege. The apprentice had devoted himself to the study, understanding that knowledge of his enemy might mean the difference one day between life and death.

General Rahm Kota.

The name still brought forth no details of combat styles, character, or last sightings from his memory. He would access the records when he reached the Rogue Shadow. There would be time to research on the journey to Nar Shaddaa. If he dug deeply enough, he might find some small detail that would give him an edge when he most needed one. That was the only preparation he required.

Entering the hangar bay, he wound his way through the familiar maze of crates, weapons racks, and starfighter parts. The ambient lighting was dim, with shadows pooling in every corner. The air tasted of metal and ozone—a sharp stink that had by now become very familiar. For some, the underbelly of a Star Destroyer might have seemed a strange place to grow up, but for him it was a comfort to be surrounded by such unambiguous symbols of technological and political power. Ships like these had patrolled the trade lanes of the galaxy for years. They had put down insurrections and quashed resistance around hundreds of worlds. Where else would a Sith apprentice live and learn?

Kill everyone aboard, Imperials and insurgents alike. Leave no witnesses.

Even as he mulled over this new development, a familiar snap-hiss sounded to his right and a glowing blue-white blade sprang into life in a dark corner of the hangar. A brown-robed figure ran forward, weapon raised.

Instantly in a fighting crouch, the apprentice brought his own blade up to block the blow, teeth bared in a delighted snarl.

He and his adversary held the pose for a bare second, lightsabers locked across their chests. The apprentice quickly sized up the being who had attacked him. Human male, fair-haired and bearded, with calm, serious eyes and a firm set to his jaw. Anyone within living memory of the Clone Wars—or possessing free access to the Jedi Archives—would have recognized him immediately.

Yagyu review

Force Unleashed was an excellent story, but im sad to say that the novel falls a bit short of bringing it to life.
Pros
1 Great Game. Like I said, the game was amazing, the story was good.
2 Starkiller. I love Galen Merik, hes the dark jedi who needs redemption i have been waiting for.
3 Darth Vader. We really get to see some of how twisted Vader has become.
4 Great gap filling. This story really fills some of the void left between episode 3 and 4

Cons
1 Poorly adapted. As was already stated in other reviews the book does tend to read like a summery rather then a novel.
2 Confusing flashbacks and out of place events. There was allot of this especially with Starkiller and Juno Eclipse.
3 Really poorly written fight scenes.
4 Starkiller is a bit too powerful.
5 Because the author writes things more like a summery especially the fight sequences things pass way to fast and you can easily find yourself lost or saying, wait what did i miss?

Overall I would recommend it as a good bridge and a good story outline, but as for a well written novelization i would say it falls short of being great. Still if you love the video game this is a great companion or if you like me are a completest then this is a must for your collection.

Typical KOTOR style where the protagonist is bad ass and everyone else can't compare
By Stephan
I played the game after I read the book, so I didn't lose out on the story the same way if I'd done it the other way around. Typical KOTOR style where the protagonist is bad ass and everyone else can't compare, but this time you're working for the dark side. The author did a good job and everything was described well. There's a bit of leeway, because the is so much that the main character is in the dark about--aside from being on the dark side of the force--but without giving any of the story away, I think it's worth reading.

Awesome story between Ep III & Ep IV...should be a series!!
By Roman85
Wasn't sure I would like this one, but after seeing highlights of the game on YouTube, I knew I had to read this one, stories set between "Sith" & "A New Hope" haven't been weighed on as much, so natually I found this story appealing, becasue this story is taking place at the same time as "Death Star" & the "Han Solo Trilogy" books, I worried about conflicts in continuity, but I could spot none, all three are seperate stories inter woven very nicely, In this one Darth Vader has a secret apprentice who he instructs to wipe out any surviving Jedi, the apprentice fulfills this mission as he is sent to kill two surviving Jedi on desolate planets, one of the Jedi has built a amatuer-like temple where he has created manneqiuns in the form of his fallen Jedi comrades, it is a scene right out of Will Smith's "I am Legend" no doubt & he is soon facing off with Starkiller(the apprentice) they fight a good fight but the aging Jedi is no match, Starkiller also tracks down another Jedi in hiding Rahm Kota who he fights a violent fight with, but Kota too has been out of the game too long & is blinded by Starkiller, but is spared, when Starkiller is betrayed by Vader after completing his tasks, he suddenly becomes an anti-hero of sorts, he is piloted by the beautiful Imperial officer Juno Eclipse who is also taken prisoner by the Empire after Starkiller is betrayed & tortured, but is rescued by Starkiller who has developed a fondness for her, he also seeks out Rahm Kota again this time for his assistance in helping bring down Vader & the Emperor, throughout this journey he has a breif encounter with Princess Leia who is apparently awaiting the Death Star plans transmission as well as Bail Organa later on who he tries to help only to discover that Darth Vader is one step ahead of him & has used him to lead him & a legion of stormtroopers to a secret rebel meeting involving Bail & many other delegates, they are all taken prisoner by Vader who once again betrays Starkiller leaving him for dead, Vader then takes Bail & the Rebel delegates to the still unfinished first Death Star where the Emperor plans to execute them personally, but Starkiller ever so resilent is picked up by Juno & they descend to the Death Star where Starkiller sneaks aboard & manages to save Bail & everyone else just in the nick of time which results in a stand off with Darth Vader who he has an intense duel with after Vader is ordered by the Emperor to finish what he started, Starkiller definately gives Vader a mean fight so much that Vader's helmet is knocked off revealing the scarred Anakin & his suit torn to shreads, now I know why the newer suit at the end of "Sith" isn't the one in "A New Hope", the difference in Vader's siut is explained here, this is a cool story & Starkiller is one cool anti-hero, WWE professional wrestler Randy Orton could play him in a film no doubt, beacuse he looks like the character, Scarlett Johansson would be perfect as Juno Eclipse simply beacuse she looks like the character & John Malkovich would be perfect as Rahm Kota, unfortunately it will never happen, but they would be perfect in the casting dept, this one ends fairly well without much of a cliffhanger & doesn't mess with continuity, I fear the second one does, haven't read it yet, but this one is a good stand alone story.

Essential reading for a well-rounded education
By Alan Heartsong
This book deals with a topic that a lot of people have problems facing - Death. Working with the spirits of the dead, suggestions for how to interact with them and involve them in your daily life are approached with practicality, wisdom, and a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor at times.

Honestly, there is a LOT of really great historical research in there, and I'd have bought the book for that alone. It puts a lot of facts in order and ties an overall picture together that many modern-day witches have forgotten about.

I will probably never have a human or other skull on my altar, except possibly a crystal one (when I can afford it), but then I don't think the skull is at all necessary. Each of us needs to find what works best for us when dealing with the spirits of the dead, after all. However I also don't think *having* a skull as part of your spiritual work is a bad thing. That is, in addition to the one that (hopefully) houses your own brain.

Christian Day, that colorful boisterous fellow who people love to pay attention to, is a natural born storyteller and should consider some fiction writing as well, he'd probably be good at it. I've been practicing Wicca since 1984, and I heartily recommend this excellently crafted book. Mr. Day has included some poignant personal stories, as well as amusing anecdotes, and I think has treated the subject of necromancy with the practicality and respect that it deserves, while not taking himself or the subject matter too seriously.

Real witches don't run from death, and apparently neither do real warlocks. After all, it's going to happen to all of us eventually, isn't it?

Review from [...]
By Rhonny Reaper
The name Christian Day in the Pagan community comes with a trail of controversy. Luckily for me, I feel, I had no clue who he was before reading this book (to be frank, I never heard of him...I just liked the book's premise. Hell, I didn't even read the "about the author" till after I read the book!), so whatever he said on TMZ about Charlie Sheen or what not had no effect on my review. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed The Witches' Book of the Dead and have been dying to tell you all about it!

The book opens with a bit of history and back story about Witches and their role in the practice of talking to the dead. Day does a very good job at showing how in old times, people who were known to communicate with the dead were outcast...yet called upon in secret by people in power. It's well written, not too long or drawn out, and interesting.

The next part of the book goes into the basics: tools, connecting with the spirit world, and what Christian calls "The Death Current", or the state of being connected with the flow of energy of the dead. Day also goes into having an altar to the dead and the importance of the Skull to a Witch. To some, the idea of having an actual skull is a bit...well strange (I thought so at first), but Day does a fantastic job in letting people know the importance it has in working with the dead and the symbolism it hold in Witches' history (I still do not own a real human skull, but I do have plenty of great substitutes on my altar such as a glass skull and a resin skull with a lid I use for offerings to The Morrigan).

The book then goes into the heart of what readers want to know, how to work with the dead, protect yourself if needed, and how to communicate with the dead. Each of these sections are covered step by step, making it easy for both the novice and the expert to commune with those passed over. Every form of communication and spellwork you could think of performing is listed: Mediumship, EVP, Scrying, Ouiji board, the Pendulum, and so many more!

It also goes into how you can ask the dead to work with you in casting spells as well. The one thing that I didn't like about this section is how Day gave the sense that it was perfectly fine to call upon the dead everyday if needed to work magic. This is just my personal opinion, but I think the dead should be allowed to rest in peace and should only be called upon to help you with spells when they are needed in a dire situation, on Samhain, or if you are working with a loved one who really doesn't seem to mind helping you (my mother's spirit for instance helps me all the time, even without me asking!). Again, this is my personal feeling towards working with the dead in magic, and Day's is different, as is every Witch's

This book is a must have resource in every Witch's library! Even if you don't agree with everything in the book, the information on how to communicate with the dead, work with them, and how to protect yourself in the event it becomes necessary is something every Witch should know. Whether you buy into the controversy surrounding Christian Day or not, this is one hell of a good book! Get your copy now HERE!

Impressed.
By RevEric
I was looking for a title for this review like "WOW!" or "AMAZING!", but I will go with a very sincere "Impressed" because having studied the Occult for 23 years now, it takes a lot to impress me.

While we are always learning on our path, even after 23 years, I found myself reading this book and running to the nearest Witch Shoppes to buy Skeleton Keys, searching on line for Skulls, and going to CVS for a jar of honey. Not because I felt they are 'required', but because it just made Magickal sense.

I was elated to see the author didn't 'tip toe through the tulips' as it were and is not a fluffy bunny Wiccan. Witchcraft is gray. I found myself in complete agreement with his ideology, while our pantheon is different.

The research is amazing. I can't say I could have put this together. When I first saw the title, "The Witches' Book of the Dead", I figured that was a pretty damn tall order to follow the Egyptian Book of the Dead, the Tibetan Book of the Dead...books that have for eons been the standard for religious practice. I was further shocked that nobody put such a book together for Witches and Warlocks until now. Kudos to the author for that one.

Suffice it to say, I do believe it lived up to it's title. My Magickal life is richer for having read (and practiced) what is within the book. But honestly, do I have anything negative to say? Not really. Definitely go out and buy this book, especially if you wish to do any work with the dead.

Atmospheric Dynamics, by Mankin Mak

Mankin Mak's textbook provides a self-contained course on atmospheric dynamics. The first half is suitable for senior undergraduates, and develops the physical, dynamical and mathematical concepts at the fundamental level. The second half of the book is aimed at more advanced students who are already familiar with the basics. The contents have been developed from many years of the author's teaching at the University of Illinois. Discussions are supplemented with schematics, weather maps and statistical plots of the atmospheric general circulation. Students often find the connection between theoretical dynamics and atmospheric observation somewhat tenuous, and this book demonstrates a strong connection between the key dynamics and real observations. This textbook is an invaluable asset for courses in atmospheric dynamics for advanced students and researchers in atmospheric science, ocean science, weather forecasting, environmental science, and applied mathematics. Some background in mathematics, physics and basic atmospheric science is assumed.

Dancing with Broken Bones: Poverty, Race, and Spirit-filled Dying in the Inner City, by David Wendell Moller

Dancing with Broken Bones gives voice and face to a vulnerable and disempowered population whose stories often remain untold: the urban dying poor. Drawing on complex issues surrounding poverty, class, and race, Moller illuminates the unique sufferings that often remain unknown and hidden within a culture of broad invisibility. He demonstrates how a complex array of factors, such as mistrust of physicians, regrettable indignities in care, and inadequate communication among providers, patients, and families, shape the experience of the dying poor in the inner city. This book challenges readers to look at reality in a different way. Demystifying stereotypes that surround poverty, Moller illuminates how faith, remarkable optimism, and an unassailable spirit provide strength and courage to the dying poor. Dancing with Broken Bones serves as a rallying call for compassionate individuals everywhere to understand and respond to the needs of the especially vulnerable, yet inspiring, people who comprise the world of the inner city dying poor.

Review

"Read this book. It will remind you why you became a physician."
The Lancet

"Moller has produced a profound literary work."
-- Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life & Palliative Care

"...stories of courage, faith, suffering, and neglect are interwoven in a remarkable book for anyone with an interest in end-of-life care."
-- Journal of Palliative Medicine

"Moller takes us through doors that we otherwise would not cross. He introduces us to people who are authentically themselves, fully alive, despite dismal circumstances. We hear their anger as well as their humor, see their suffering as well as their joy. They teach us the importance of feeling connected to others and the critical value of forgiveness, gratitude, and love at the end of life. Suffering misfortune that few of us can imagine, the people whose stories Moller tells reveal the inherent dignity and the indomitable nature of the human spirit." -- Ira Byock, MD, author of Dying Well, and co-founder of Life's End Institute: Missoula Demonstration Project

"For most of us, the lives and deaths of the urban homeless remain invisible and largely unfathomable. Dr. Moller and his colleagues have had the courage to enter this world, and to even take medical students with them! In Dancing with Broken Bones, we too are invited along to witness its tragedies and its humanity. In these remarkable real-life narratives, we can contemplate what a dignified death might look like in the face of extreme poverty and homelessness. In doing so, we are invited to consider what is important in our own privileged lives and deaths, and how we should be caring for those who are far less fortunate." --Timothy E. Quill, MD, Professor of Medicine, Psychiatry and Medical Humanities, Palliative Care Program and Program for Biopsychosocial Studies, University of Rochester School of Medicine

"Dr. Moller has shed light on the forgotten world of illness and dying in the urban poor. Through eloquence, grace, and wit, he makes us face what to many is too painful to contemplate - death that is painful, lonely, and unwanted. This book will serve as a landmark in the death and dying literature, forcing health professionals and society at large to work harder toward an equitable system of healthcare for the living and the dying." -- David E. Weissman, MD, Palliative Care Center, Medical College of Wisconsin

"This book moved me to tears, to anger, to repeated shocks of recognition, as well as to joy and to pride at being part of a human race whose members are capable of such remarkable love and care for one another." -- Diane E. Meier, MD, Director, Center to Advance Palliative Care, and Professor, Departments of Geriatrics and Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine

"The grace and dignity of humanity is pervasive and memorable in these stories of living with poverty and fatal illness; but I hope that we are also profoundly moved to relieve the tragic circumstances that poverty and inept healthcare arrangements inflicted upon the people whose stories David Moller tells." -- Joanne Lynn, MD, The Washington Home Center for Palliative Care Studies, RAND Health, and Americans for Better Care of the Dying

Fun book. Silly survey.
By Anthony Welsh
It's funny. The survey asks things like if the plot is Predictable or Full of Surprises. This is supposed to be predictable with 1-dimensional characters. That's what makes it funny. The 2nd edition is great too.

TOTAL Fail
By Robert Hutchings
Where is the C++ code for the UNIX system calls, or ANY Unix code? Most of THAT is in C, NOT C++. Total waste of time and money.

A Review of Unix System Programming Using C++
By A Customer
Professor Terrence Chan of the University of California Berkeley and Santa Cruz extension programs teaching Advanced UNIX Programming with C and C++.
Reviewed By Qi Luo
This book is a good reference source for threads and UNIX system calls. When a novice C++ programmer and starting to delve into Solaris system calls, this book gives out a lot of the examples and explanations a reader need to develop her or his applications. It also saves her or him from creating utilities that may be not known but already in its existence. I especially like the format. It gives a simple explanation, an example of each of the major parts, an example of the code that compiled under a real world environment, and a display of the program in action.
This book helps C programmers on UNIX in advanced C++ programming techniques in the UNIX/POSIX environment, so that they will understand the advanced features of the ANSI-C language, become familiar with C library functions and the UNIX system calls, and become familiar with the ANSI-C and POSIX standards.
This book is also a good reference for UNIX. When the OOP/C++ was not as mature as now and still in progress a few years ago while the book was written, it may cover more on the Objected Oriented Programming if it were written today. I have worked for a few leading large-scale high-performance trading engine systems for stock exchanges, such as Pacific Exchange, the national third largest, NASDAQ Stock Market, the national second largest, commodities exchanges, and Internet auction engine, and global company rating search engines. I still found the part about threads in UNIX system programming a useful reference.
Mr. Terrence Chan's book will help readers: If you're an experienced UNIX system programmer working in C++, UNIX System Programming Using C++ brings together all the advanced techniques you need to build more effective software, to write more powerful C++ programs more quickly.
This book tried to focus on the real-life challenges you face developing network and client/server applications, databases, compilers, operating systems, and CAD systems. You can learn new ways to develop C++ programs that are strongly type-checked, compact, and easy to maintain.
You will find the author also tried to cover:
1. Advanced ANSI C and some advanced C++ programming techniques, including function pointers and functions that accept variable numbers of arguments 2. How to use ANSI C library functions and C++ standard classes to reduce development time and maximize portability 3. The UNIX kernel structure and API -- and how to use them to manipulate system resources UNIX processes and signals 4. UNIX sockets and TLI, the network transport protocols that allow you to create multi-tasking distributed client/server applications 5. UNIX multithreaded programming, including thread APIs, synchronization and thread-specific data
The book includes extensive example programs that demonstrate how C++ classes, library functions and system APIs are used. To help you build more portable applications, there's also coverage of the POSIX.1 and POSIX.1b standards.
Today's distributed, networked applications require you to understand and utilize advanced UNIX system programming techniques. With UNIX System Programming Using C++, you will learn those techniques and become comfortable using them.
If you will be programming in C with C++ encapsulation, this book is useful. As we all know, no book is perfect. The typos in code lists are especially annoying for software developers. Some statistics suggested that 80% of debugging time be spent on misspellings or naming errors. If you can see through the typographic errors and extract the essence from this book, this book is still worth of reading and a place on her or his bookshelf.

Though not a textbook, Gives Very Good Idea ..
By eksuraj
I looked at lot of Unix system programming books, none of them explain how it is implemented in the system and how to use it. If someone is new to Unix Systems programming, this book gives qute a boost. It is easy to read book.

I had to change 4 jobs in past 8 years and each time this book has been a quick review of the Unix concepts & system programming.

Example: About Posix threads, I searched on internet and looked at many books including Stevens(2nd ed), but got good confidence about it after going thru the 4 pages in here than anywhere else.
