A Real Gem!

Disclaimer: I was given a free ebook copy for reviewing purposes.

As a NAV developer with basic reporting experience, I was happy to be given the chance to review this book. My initial hopes were that I might discover a few new tidbits and perhaps some clarification on features that are not fully explained in the MSDN documentation. My expectations were more than exceeded.

The first three chapters alone went into enough depth (with very helpful screenshots and accompanying example reports) to expand my knowledge and comfort levels with reports. The content is great, but I also find the Steven Renders' writing style to be quite clear and in tune with me.

Once you get past the basics, you really get to see what is possible in NAV reporting. The Data Visualization Techniques chapter (chapter 4) was particularly eye-opening, where Renders gets you to think about how to present data to the user, rather than focusing only on content.

Another feeling you get from the book is that Renders has real-world experience with NAV reporting. He drops little hints to deal with situations that you'll likely face, but are not something you would normally include in a book. For example, he gives the following tip, which I have had an issue with in my own personal experience:

If Report Data is not available in the View window, then click
somewhere in the body of the report to make it available in the
View menu. Visual Studio automatically populates the toolbars with
options depending on what you have selected in the layout.

Tips like that can save people from frustration when they are following a tutorial on a site such as MSDN and for some reason unbeknownst to the developer/user, the menu you are supposed to click on is not there.

This book has been a great read and I will be referring back to it often. I highly recommend it for anyone ranging from a beginner to an intermediate NAV report developer. It may even be useful experts (I don't know any reporting experts or gurus, so I can't speculate on the book's usefulness for them).

Great book, I learnt a lot.

I am a NAV developer who works with classic client and interested in learning the RTC version. My experience with RDLC reports has been pretty frustrating. I can say Steven Renders' book helped me to gain great deal of knowledge related to NAV RDLC reporting data-model and I feel more confident with the RDLC reports. The book actually gives more information that I expected (especially chapters 8, 9, 10 and 11). The screenshots in the book are exceptionally clear. I enjoyed the conversational narration with tips and warnings. I find it easy to read and examples are easy to apply in NAV.

* Chapters# 1,2,3: I believe developers,like myself, who upgrade their skills will benefit the most from these chapters. Some examples were exemplary that I learnt stuff that I thought it was impossible to do in NAV. The book gives a good line of examples from simple report design to advanced row-column groupings with totaling and visually appealing reports with great, interesting tips and tricks.

* Chapter 6,7 have plenty of good tips and design guidelines. I think the tips in this book are kind of tips and tricks that you can apply to most of your reports.

* Chapter 4 (data-visualization techniques), Chapter 8 (Word-layouts) and Chapter 9 (Power BI): So far I have worked with classic client, excel reports and SOAP web services. I am not sure if I will work with Power BI but I really liked seeing the possibilities in RDLC reports. I'll probably come back to these chapters for a review.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book to developers who struggle with the new report design in NAV and looking for a good start to learn it. If you are an expert in RDLC reporting and looking for reference related to Word Layouts, Power BI and Reporting Services, please check other users' comments.

More than just RDLC-reports!

Let the title NOT fool you! When I saw the title, I was immediately thinking: a book about how to write RDLC reports. After seeing the Table of Contents, I realized it is much more than that.
Well, the title does NOT say it only about RDLC reports. Does it? No. It is about reporting in general.

Who is this book for? Mostly for NAV Developers. But also for the everyone who works with NAV. Just to know what are the possibilities to do reporting with NAV. And most of these tools come for free! With these tools you can dazzle your customers with the beautiful reports you can create! And with some explanation, you can offload some report-creation to the customer too!

The book starts with the first 7 chapters about RDLC reporting as expected. It starts with the basics and which each next chapter, it is going more in-depth. We see the basics, Tablix, Expressions, Data Visualization Techniques, Document Reports, Tips&Tricks, performance.

With chapter 8 we Word Reporting and how to manage them.

Chapter 9 had a lot of surprises for me with Power BI. I knew about Power BI, that the word "Power" isn’t there for nothing. But I was really surprised with all the "Powers" it has!

Chapter 10 is about SQL Server Reporting Services. I have been studying that for a short time before RDLC was not it the NAV dictionary but stopped with it because I wouldn’t be using it in a short time, so I would forget it. Yes, SSRS (=SQL Server Reporting Services) uses RDLC too, but has a whole other range of possibilities that NAV RDLC reporting doesn’t have. There is the word "Service" in it! And no, I am not going deeper into this. I leave that up to you to discover.

And then, the final chapter is about Charts in Dynamics NAV. We all know there are charts in NAV, but have you ever used them? Do you know how to use them? If no, than this chapter is for you!

But Ponter is also befriended-by a doctor and a physicist who share his questing intelligence and boundless enthusiasm for the world's strangeness, and especially by geneticist Mary Vaughan, a lonely woman with whom he develops a special rapport.

Meanwhile, Ponter's partner, Adikor Huld, finds himself with a messy lab, a missing body, suspicious people all around, and an explosive murder trial that he can't possibly win because he has no idea what actually happened. Talk about a scientific challenge!

In this polished anthropological SF yarn, the first of a trilogy from Nebula Award winner Sawyer (The Terminal Experiment), Neanderthals have developed a radically different civilization on a parallel Earth, as both sides discover when a Neanderthal physicist, Ponter Boddit, accidentally passes from his universe into a Canadian underground research facility. Fortunately, a team of human scientists, including expert paleoanthropologist Mary Vaughan, promptly identifies and warmly receives Ponter. Solving the language problem and much else is a mini-computer called a Companion implanted in the brain of every Neanderthal. A computerized guardian spirit, however, doesn't eliminate cross-cultural confusion permanent male-female sexuality, rape and overpopulation are all alien to Ponter nor can it help his housemate and fellow scientist back in his world, Adikor Huld, when the authorities charge Adikor with his murder. Ponter's daughter Jasmel believes in Adikor's innocence, but to prevent a horrendous miscarriage of justice (Adikor could be sterilized), she must try to reopen the portal and bring her father home. The author's usual high intelligence and occasionally daunting erudition are on prominent display, particularly in the depiction of Neanderthal society. Some plot points border on the simplistic, such as Mary's recovering from a rape thanks to Ponter's sensitivity, but these are minor flaws in a novel that appeals to both the intellect and the heart.

The smaller-scale, peaceful, environmentally savvy world of Ponter's people is equally well realized, though Sawyer loses a little steam trying to pin humanity's woes on organized religion. Intriguing alt-universe

I read Hominids while working my way through the list of Hugo winning novels and was hooked from the beginning. The writing is very simple and nothing especially creative and some of the dialogue is pretty cliche, but what is really intriguing is the alternative-world and society building. A whole lot of research went into the physics of the basic premise, as well as sociology, anthropology, etc to build this alternative universe and Neanderthal society. It does drag a bit in the middle and the climax is not terribly exciting, but I had trouble putting it down regardless and am looking forward to the next installment of the series.

Original, Entertaining

Reading Sawyer's first book in his Neanderthal trilogy, I was struck by how simple a read it was. He did not get into a super-pretentiousness when he would do a little world-building. His descriptions of the Neanderthal alternate-Earth were in some ways veiled criticisms of our judicial system (in their world, you're guilty until proven innocent) and lack of privacy (everyone has a computer, a Companion, grafted to them when they are recently born) as all your actions are recorded at a central database.

The other Earth, us, is a recent future where a Canadian company, INCO, is doing heavy water experiments in an old mine, cleaned up and rocking with a few goofy, cardboard-cut-out scientists.

The main character in our Earth is Mary, whom Sawyer creates as a sympathetic character by having her raped. Sorry but I thought this was unnecessary and graphic. I think the reader could have had some sympathy for her without her being violated. Further, we hear nothing more about the rapist for the rest of the book! What happened to him?

Despite this tragic scene, nothing is made much of it. Mary is nervous around men but that's about it. When Ponter, the Neanderthal scientist, gets sucked into our world, Mary becomes infatuated with him. A touching scene at the end of the novel wraps that up a bit.

A third of the book is dedicated toward the trial of Ponter's best friend, who is being tried for the supposed murder of Ponter, since Ponter disappeared and the idea of falling into an alternate Earth is just beyond anyone's reality.

Last Thoughts: Decent pacing, good science. Love how the media is portrayed as a bunch of wolves after a story (same in the Neanderthal world - called Exhibitionists!). The relationship between Mary and Ponter could have been better explored, as well as further developing the scientist Louise and her new boyfriend.

So far I'm reaching for the next in the trilogy, "Human."

I found the storyline fascinating. The premise of the narrative is that we exist alongside a parallel universe in which humanity developed along the Neanderthal branch of our family tree rather than the Homo Sapiens. The mechanics of how a Neanderthal made the leap into our universe (and what happened to him here) are less interesting to me than the descriptions of the Neanderthal universe itself. Given the abysmal outlook for our side of the coin today, I found hope in the glimpse of the Neanderthal side, where the Earth is cared for rather than destroyed and humanity has coped successfully with population control, crime, and greed.

About the Author
James W. Fraser is Professor of History and Education at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University. His teaching includes a survey course in U.S. History for future Social Studies teachers and courses in the History of American Education, Religion & Public Education, and Inquiries into Teaching and Learning. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Dr. Fraser is the President of the History of Education Society and a former member of the Editorial Board of the History of Education Quarterly. He served as Senior Vice President for Programs at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation in Princeton, New Jersey, from 2008 to 2012. He has also served as NYU liaison to the New Design High School, a public high school in New York’s Lower East Side, and to Facing History and Ourselves.

Before coming to New York University, Dr. Fraser taught in the Department of History and the program in education at Northeastern University in Boston, where he was the founding dean of Northeastern’s School of Education. He was also a member and chair of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Education Deans Council, the Boston School Committee Nominating Committee, and other boards. He was a lecturer in the Program in Religion and Secondary Education at the Harvard University Divinity School from 1997 to 2004. He has taught at Lesley University; University of Massachusetts, Boston; Boston University; and Public School 76 Manhattan. He is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and was pastor of Grace Church in East Boston, Massachusetts, from 1986 to 2006.

In addition to By the People, Dr. Fraser is the author or editor of twelve books including The School in the United States: A Documentary History, a third edition of which will be published in 2014, Preparing America’s Teachers: A History (2007), and A History of Hope: When Americans Have Dared to Dream of a Better Future (2002). He lives in New York City with his wife Katherine Hanson and their dog, Pebble.

Understated Appreciation

I first saw these photographs at an exhibit in the Portland Art Museum. If you're looking for drama, this is not your book. It's a a candid glimpse into everyday culture for women in the ~1960s. I can see why some may find it banal, but the realism was beautiful and engaging to me: I loved seeing the fashion, public sphere, and body language of the subjects. I plan to buy this for myself and a couple of family members this holiday season for a coffee table book.

Articulatory Phonetics presents a concise and non-technical introduction to the physiological processes involved in producing sounds in human speech. With a primary focus on the basic anatomy and physiology of speech and how different kinds of speech sounds are made, the text serves as an ideal guide through this burgeoning area of research.

The authors trace the path of the speech production system through to the point where simple vocal sounds are produced, covering the nervous system, muscles, respiration, and phonation. Subsequent chapters continue through the supralaryngeal system with focus on particular sounds of human speech, and introduce some of the more complex anatomical concepts of articulatory phonetics, including coarticulation and articulatory conflict. The most current methodologies, measurement tools, and theories are also addressed. Chapter-by-chapter exercises and a series of original illustrations take the mystery out of the anatomy, physiology, and measurement techniques relevant to speech research.

Articulatory Phonetics

This a much-awaited book, in that nothing like it has ever been published. It covers up to date findings and technology about articulation, presented in an easy-to understand way. The figures are especially well done, very clear and very well annotated. The chapter on co-articulation is very interesting, clearly showing examples of how, for instance, tongue articulation of schwa changes when preceded by a /w/ consonant. The book is a very good educational tool, for students as well as teachers, since it presents articulatory data in a way that often is not easily available. There are also good, easy to make models of the larynx (using paper) and the tongue (using clay). And, each chapter ends with some questions for the students to think about, as well as an online assignment. I teach classes in English pronunciation and English as a Second Language and I look forward to using this as a text book.

About the Author
Dr. Larry Linkous is a third generation preacher whose more than forty years of public ministry experiences has sharpened his awareness and sensitivity to the challenges and needs of people in this demanding world. Larry spent his younger years out of Bible school in evangelism and youth ministry, but early on realized his true calling as pastor, a shepherd of God's sheep.

Dr. Linkous has been married for forty-four years to his wife Sandra and they pastor a great inter-denominational multicultural church on the Space Coast of Florida, a church they founded in 1983. In 1990 Larry began a daily two-and-a-half hour radio program Thee Morning Drive that continues to broadcast daily Monday thru Friday from 6:30 to 9:00 eastern time airing on many stations across the nation and streaming around the world at www.FindNew Life.com.

I am a fan of Pastor Linkous. I have enjoyed his preaching and encouraging radio show for years. I also enjoyed the book. It contains basic Christian concepts and presents them in a manner that is easy to understand and apply to one's life.

Crimes and Murders

Witness for the Prosecution

Agatha Christie wrote these nine stories in the 1930s and 1940s. They are entertaining as long as you don't question their assumptions. They show the culture from over seventy years ago. I found the best story was "Philomel Cottage". They are mostly about murders. Does this meet the reader's concerns?

"Witness for the Prosecution" tells about the murder of an elderly lady who befriended a young man and named him as the sole heir to her fortune. Does he have an alibi for the time of murder? Can this witness be impeached? [This assumes no background investigation of those letters and witness.]
"The Red Signal" is about the validity of a premonition. Uncle Arlington warns his nephew against his love interest. Can he be framed for a murder? Does this involve insanity? Can you trust your instincts?
"The Fourth Man" tells about four men in a train carriage who discuss a woman with multiple personalities. She has a friend who went into show business and died young. Was this story believable? The fourth man comments.

"S.O.S." is about a family living in an isolated house; its raining. A traveler arrives seeking shelter, and is given a bedroom for the night. Who wrote letters in the dust? Will one of the daughters inherit a large fortune? Is the other girl in danger?
"Where There's a Will" starts when Mrs. Harter is warned against worry and excitement. Her nephew suggests a radio set. One day she hears a strange voice from the radio! Is it a message from the spirit world? Who will inherit her fortune?
"The Mystery of the Blue Jar" tells how a young man hears a cry for help. A young woman near by did not hear it. It repeats. What is it? There is a meeting with this blue jar in a cottage. Will this turn out to be a scam to steal valuable property?

"Philomel Cottage" is the home of Mrs. Alix Martin and her new husband. Gerald (a perfect stranger). Alix put up the money to buy this house. She hears disturbing news from the old man that tends the flower beds. Then old newspaper clippings told of an accused murderer. What will happen that night?
"Accident" starts with the retirement of Inspector Evans of the CID. A neighbor was acquitted of poisoning her husband. Mr. Merrowdene took out life insurance recently. Evans joins them for tea. Will he make a misstep? [Believable?]
"The Second Gong" tells how people are summoned for dinner. They hear a noise like a shot. The master of the house did not show up. He is found dead in a locked room, a small pistol in his hand! Hercule Poirot was called to investigate a swindle. Poirot questions the other guests. Then he offers a solution. Was it the obvious suspect?

Agatha Christie's Great Stage Success

Dame Agatha Christie (1890-1976) originally dazzled readers with a series of mystery novels and short stories. Several of these were adapted to the stage. Disliking the results, Christie decided to try her own hand, and during the 1940s and 1950s she created one roaring success after another. Three are particularly famous: TEN LITTLE INDIANS (1944), THE MOUSETRAP (1952), WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (1953.)

Based on a short story originally known as "Traitors Hands," WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION differs from most Christie works in that it is more of a courtroom drama than a mystery per se. The play opens in the offices of Sir Wilfred Robarts, who is asked to defend Leonard Vole from a pending murder charge. Leonard's situation is extremely unfortunate. Himself a poor man, he became friendly with a rich and elderly woman. He visited her the same night she was murdered, and her will makes him heir to her estate. Leonard swears he was at home with his wife, German-born Romaine, at the time of the murder. But when Sir Wilfred interviews Romaine, he finds her an extremely unsatisfactory witness. She does not seem to care very much whether Leonard is convicted or not, and she shocks Sir Wilfred when she agrees to appear as a witness--not for Leonard's defense, but for the prosecution.

The first act sets up the basic circumstances; the second act plays out the trial itself, with Romaine giving damning evidence against her husband. Both are meticulously constructed, beautifully written, and abounding with intelligent and witty dialogue and interesting characters. But the great talent of a truly gifted mystery writer is the ability to suddenly gather up the various details of the a story and pull them to an entirely logical but unforeseen and extremely sharp point. This is precisely the case with WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION. Having received new evidence, Sir Wilfred is able to discredit Romaine's testimony, and this would seem the end of the play--but not so. In the final minutes of the play, indeed in slightly less than two pages of dialogue, Christie twists the material with a master hand, turning our perceptions inside out twice and then suddenly concluding the play in a manner that has left audiences gasping ever since.

WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION had tremendously successful runs on the London and New York stage; it also received a very fine screen adaptation in 1957. And therein a certain problem lies: it is so widely seen that many know the way in which the play concludes. This, along with the fact that it requires a very large cast and extremely complex series of sets, has tended to put a damper on the play's production ever since. Even so, WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION remains a masterpiece of the genre, a piece that even those who aren't particularly fond of mysteries will find fascinating to the end. Recommended.

Roger Crisp is Uehiro Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at St Anne's College, Oxford and Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford. He edited the Oxford Handbook of the History of Ethics (2013), and is author of Reasons and the Good (2006) and several articles on ethics, including one for The Cambridge Companion to Utilitarianism (Cambridge, 2014).

It's Aristotle. If you like the 'Politics', 'Rhetoric', 'Ars Poetica', etc. you will find this to be intellectually stimulating and well worthwhile. In my opinion, everyone should read as much Aristotle as possible. It would make for a lot better world..
