Oliver presents 20 different projects that readers can easily make to keep their furry friends content, healthy, and active. The first section provides lists of tools and materials required for construction, with most of the items readily available for free or cheaply at a craft or hardware store. The projects are then divided into five sections based on hamster-related activities: running, climbing, digging, chewing, and resting. Step-by-step directions for each project are accompanied by a mix of detailed drawings and photographs. Most of the tasks can be completed without adult supervision. Kids will need just glue, paper, cardboard, and Popsicle sticks, though a few projects require a drill and utility knife. While this work targets hamsters specifically, many of its suggestions could be adapted for other pets, such as gerbils or mice. What a cool book! Hamsters are notorious for chewing anything they can and most activity toys or sleeping places are pricey. You don't need much to build the plans in this book and they are inexpensive.

Great ideas for crafty kids

I got this book for my daughters for X-mas because they got a hamster, their first pet. They are very crafty and I thought they might enjoy making something for their new hammy. This book is pretty simple (my daughters are 8) they made the hamster swing with a little help from me in gluing. You can adapt some of the steps in the directions but the ideas are super cute. It's a little pricey though, but it made a nice gift for crafty kids.I anticipate they will have fun making more of the "toys" in this book for Mr. Wood Shavings.
