Sluyter's Back, and It's a Snap

Dean Sluyter has long been one of my favorite writers on the inner development beat. This is his first book in ten years, and he's as funny, unassuming, and real as ever. Now, with those additional years of teaching (and practicing!) meditation under his belt, he's produced what I consider his clearest, most straightforward book. The message is simple: You want to meditate? Do this (relax in the passenger seat), don't do this (grit your teeth and try to control things), and here's what happens (life gets real, real good).
Sluyter writes with the big-picture perspective of a seasoned veteran of the enlightenment path (40-something years), but one who remembers what it's like to be a newbie hearing the stuff for the first time. He's duly respectful of the old traditions, but not caught up in any one of them. He writes in plain American English about being a serious meditative practitioner in a Facebook / iPhone world, and he makes the whole thing so friendly and approachable that just about anyone can get it. And, as a long-time student of high-level teachings like Dzogchen and Advaita, he makes a convincing case that "simple and easy" doesn't mean "watered down." It happens to be what the sages teach.

Don't know anything about meditation? Dean Sluyter's Natural Meditation is the book for you! Been practicing meditation for years? Dean Sluyter's Natural Meditation is the book for you! Sluyter has been practicing and teaching meditation for years, and his humorous and accessible style of writing will appeal to anyone who enjoys reading. I loved his earlier book Cinema Nirvana and was thrilled to find out he had a new book out. If you want to hear from an expert and be thoroughly entertained along the way Natural Meditation is the book for you!

Witty, Helpful, Wise

Wish you knew how to meditate? Already know? Either way, you can profitably enjoy this fun-to-read book. Even if you already understand turiya and tonglen, there should be wisdom gems for everyone.
Reading Natural Meditation is a creative experience. The reader is invited to follow the clear, easy suggestions, try them out, and return. Two chapters ("First Glimmers" and "Advanced Glimmers") suggest how well you may be doing. As in Sluyter's other books, the insights are sometimes enhanced by witty plays of meaning. My favorite chapters feature Meditating "on Sound," "on Love" (powerfully moving!), "on I," and "into Sleep." But all are vividly, inspiringly helpful.
