Biography of an author working as a surgeon

A well written biography of a brilliant but troubled man who was afflicted by psychological disease yet managed to develop one of the most illustrious reputations in the field of surgery. Bailey was socially inept, condescending to his colleagues and domineering to his subordinates. His patients revered him but his fellow surgeons loathed him and denied him professional honors and awards. He was a prolific writer and with the help of his photographer wife, Veta, produced beautifully detailed and illustrated textbooks of surgery that have stood the test of time to this day. Hamilton Bailey's name is synonymous with surgery throughout the English speaking world. But he was more of a theoretical "book surgeon" than a practical one. His clinical and technical skills were considered subpar by his contemporaries as shown by the many complications that followed his forays in the operating theater.Ultimately his intellectual arrogance and the timidity of his treating physicians, who were in awe of his reputation, led to his death.
The elegant narrative supported by extensive details make this book an enjoyable read. It should have a place in the library of any serious student of medical history.

biography of a mesmerizing figure....

How can you imagine that a surgeon, who was born more than a hundred years ago, managed to have his name preserved in surgical textbooks still bearing his name nowadays? "Hamilton Bailey " is such a legendary name. Bailey never had the manual dexterity required for a surgeon. Early in his career, he got abscess of the hand which led to the amputation of his left index finger (as was the treatment in the pre-antibiotic era). He was poor at socialising and he was never welcome by patients and colleagues. He even had intractable manic-depressive illness and had a close shave from leucotomy. The secret of his tremendous productivity in textbook writing must be indebted, at least in part, to his wife Veta. This book is very enjoyable to read ... the only difficulty for me is to overcome the tons of unfamiliar names and places!
