About the Author
Kip S. Thorne is a theoretical physicist, known for his contributions in gravitation physics and astrophysics and for having trained a generation of scientists. He is considered one of the few authorities on gravitational waves. He was the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at Caltech until 2009, when he resigned to pursue writing and filmmaking.

Mixed Feelings

The idea of a pedagogical introduction to the membrane paradigm is a good one. However, the authors' treatment is
far from self-contained; I was disappointed. My particular interest was in the treatment of electrodynamics outside the black hole. Unfortunately, the key equations (Maxwell's equations) were not derived but were referenced to another paper. I obtained the reference paper (with some difficulty) and found that again key results were simply stated based on an earlier reference. Now I have to put all this together, coping with the changes in notation and conventions. Not fun!
